2 found dead in ‘apparent homicide' at Brentwood mansion owned by director Rob Reiner

LIVE BREAKING NEWS: 2 found dead in 'apparent homicide' at Brentwood mansion owned by director Rob Reiner. We're following this breaking news right now.

A death is under investigation at a Brentwood home on CHADBOURAVENUE. Right now. We know there are two victims, we're told, a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman. The Thelapidated Homicide Unit is on the scene.

Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This morning, I talked about the resumption of our operations to make sure that we support the Jewish community,

to ensure we have confidence in the Jewish community. Today, over 320 police officers are being deployed. We will continue to increase that number to ensure the Jewish community feels safe.

Know that the police are there to protect them and that they can go about their lives. The kind of atrocities that we saw yesterday cannot be tolerated, and it is not appropriate.

That no section of the community goes about their normal lives. I understand, and the NSW Police understand the fear that is within that community at this time.

And I think it is really important that we show our resolute support for the community so that they can get on with their lives. This morning, I have had the opportunity to meet with the families and the officers who were injured yesterday.

Both families are incredibly supportive of the support they have received from the police family. One of the important things about this is that the NSW Police Force has come together to ensure

That we support each other and support the brave officers who went forward yesterday. We know that countless people are alive now because of the actions of innocent people, and I thank them.

For what they are doing. Our investigation under Operation ARKs is ongoing. I will only provide limited updates on that. The really important thing is to say that we currently have a 24-year-old male in hospital.

Based on his medical condition, it is likely that this man could face criminal charges. I am very concerned that if this man has the respect of a court.

Then there is no prejudice in any prosecution against him. I was very happy to take questions later. Can I hand it over to the Prime Minister? Can I say

I have reiterated this message many times in previous press conferences. This is a time for calm. Retaliatory actions against any part of any community will not be tolerated.

We will have a significant policing presence. This is a time for the community to come together. This is a time when the police will take action to ensure that the community feels safe.

We do not expect this in New South Wales. These types of actions, what we saw yesterday, are abhorrent. We have taken strong action. We want to ensure that the community is now well.

It would be great to take questions later. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Commissioner. Um, thank you for being here this afternoon. Oh, obviously, it's a very difficult day in Sydney.

With the Treasurer and the Minister for Multiculturalism this morning. I met with Jewish community leaders, spoke to many of them on the phone, and reiterated the public's unwavering support for this community in this incredibly dark hour.

And to let them know that the people of Australia are behind them and with them and are grieving with them today. This is a shocking and shocking act of violence.

That we have spoken out about it, and it needs to be met by a response from the government, community, and police. Operation Shelter will be massive, and it could be traumatic for people in the days to come.

But we need to send a clear message to the people of this state, and this affected community who have seen so much violence and harm, that the New South Wales Police are there to protect them.

To keep them safe, and that they have every right to celebrate their faith and enjoy this festival free from the deep concern and sadness associated with this horrific violence. Um, a few things I'll get to before I hand it over to the Minister for Police. A memorial has been set up at the back of Bondi.

Pavilion. I have seen people already laying flowers at the site. We will encourage members of the community to do so. Seeing record enquiries and massive queues at blood donation services in NSW

It is encouraging. If you want to do this act of civic duty, please be patient. But it is warmly welcomed, and it will go to a good cause.

This is something practical that you can do in response to this terrible act. The NSW crisis cabinet meeting, uh, committee I said met last night. It will meet again this afternoon and daily thereafter.

The national cabinet crisis committee will also be meeting this afternoon, and I  and the police commissioner and I will be at it with national security officials. Oh, we will be meeting the national security committee this afternoon.

We are urging people to contact the Public Information and Enquiry Centre if they have information or want information. It is open and operating 24/7 on 1800227228.

The Public Information and Enquiry Centre will answer general questions and also register people who are forced to abandon personal property in their immediate area that may be under police protection or a police block.

Oh, we know there are cars, oh, vaults, and phones in the area. This is the best number to call to retrieve your personal belongings. Operation Shelter, as the Police Commissioner has said

, is ready and operational, but will be expanded in the coming days. Bondi Public BondiBeach, sorry, the .public school is closed due to its proximity to the scene.

School counselling services have been arranged at nearby public schools. And I understand that if people need urgent help or advice regarding an emergency health

Matter, the Premier's Department counsellors are on site. If you need help and support, they are working on setting up a static operation on site in Bondi, because there is no doubt that the community will.

Having spoken to the leaders of the Jewish community today, they are in crisis, and obviously, many of them are incredibly upset by what they have seen.

One of the perpetrators is dead, 16 in total. 38 people are being treated in hospitals in New South Wales, and that is all I will say for now. I will hand it over to the Police Minister.

Thank you very much, Premier. Um, as the Premier just said, the Premier's councillors are on site, and I have just come back from Bondi, and I can honestly say

That their support is not only deterring officers but people in general who are out there, and it is having a really big impact. So, um, we must get that message across.

If you need to talk to someone, Vidoo actually has this operation out there. We have experts who want to help. They also came out to meet the police and thank them.

We have police out of metropolitan Sydney and around that area of Bondi at the moment from uh commands, and you know the police got a call this morning.

Which was at quarter to 4 today, and they were instructed to go straight out and without any hesitation. The um Blue family really does have each other's backs. They have the community's backs.

And they're just so happy to help keep our community safe. Oh, I spoke to some of the Jewish leaders there. They were grateful for the police and the work that they were doing.

As we well know, the relationship between the Jewish community and the NSW Police is strong, and they've been working with CSG and our Jewish leaders for a few years now, given the circumstances that we've been in that community. Um, me too.

Just wanted to advise you that last night the Premier and I were at Bondi. We went to the police station, and there were at least 5060 police officers there. Um, most of them were off duty.

They just heard the incident, put on their uniforms, got in their cars, and drove to Bondi police station because they knew they were going to be needed. We didn't just have them from their pack.

That their locals are as far as Newcastle, Southernland, Western Sydney, you name it. The police here in New South Wales do a great job, and they are here to help each other.

They are here to support our community, and we are very grateful for that. We are all happy to ask questions. Commissioner, ABC has reported.

The youngest shooter was being investigated by the AO six years ago for links to the Sydney-based Islamic State terrorist group.

Um, was there a flag raised within the police about his father's gun licence with six registered firearms because he is known to be associated with the Islamic State?

Licence. Does that include the associations of his family members? It really depends on the nature of the association, the nature of the intelligence that is there. They have to weigh all of that up against the firearms law.

. Prime Minister, how do we change the gun law so that a person who commits sabotage doesn't have six licensed firearms? You've finally become a farmer.

Yes. Well, look, we're seeing it as we speak. Um, I think it's time we had a change in the law in relation to firearms legislation in New South Wales.

But I'm not prepared to announce it today. We want to make sure that the potential reform and change in New South Wales has a lasting impact, but this is not the last time.

I will mention this, and you can expect action soon. Why was he given a firearm? I cannot answer that question. We have that information because he met the eligibility criteria for a firearms licence.

So, the firearms licence was to be for a recreational hunting licence. There are two types of hunting licences. The ability to hunt on property or as part of a hunting club.

So, a gun club. He was a member of a gun club, and by the nature of the Firearms Act, he was entitled to be issued a firearms licence. Sorry. Sorry, just one at a time, please.

Excuse me? Do we know which gun that is? I don't have those details at the moment. Sorry. What category of gun licence does he have? Understand

The different categories allow you to register different types of firearms. He had a category AB licence, which entitled him to possess a long weapon.

Which he had as a registered firearm. Commissioner, is the NSW Firearms Registry talking to the federal authorities? Like they would know what the AIO knew about his son?

It depends on the nature of it, and as Asid said this morning, there is very little investigation at this time. We want to understand whether that person was, and certainly by the standards was he eligible to hold a firearms licence.

We take into account all the intelligence that is available. So yes, we certainly do. The Prime Minister has not had any discussions with his investigation into the 24-year-old individual.
